Internet locks work like a mail slot. Anyone can drop a letter in. Only the person with the key can open the box.

The slot = the guest count (anyone can see it). The key = the table size (only the owner knows). Real locks use a number 617 digits long. Trying sizes one by one, the whole world together wouldn't finish.

An ordinary computer is walking a dark restaurant with a flashlight, one guest at a time. A quantum computer switches on the floodlight: the whole room at once, and the repeating pattern jumps out.

Is this manager (a big enough machine) here yet? Not that we know of. In 2025 a researcher worked out that under a million qubits could open a 617-digit lock in under a week. The biggest machines now have a few thousand.

A restaurant gets a health inspector for the kitchen. Computer systems get inspectors too. They have permission to try the locks, to find weak spots before a thief does. Red Team Partners in London is one.
