Amulet markets label in all four ways and often in none, and this record is about the picture that results.",
  "story": "The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul solved the problem by not signing at all. Until the restoration that followed the 1894 earthquake it had no shops in the western sense: merchants sat on wooden divans in front of their shelves, each occupying a space six to eight feet wide and three to four feet deep, a space called a dolap, Turkish for stall. The best stock was kept in cabinets and not displayed. \"Another peculiarity was the complete lack of advertising,\" the published account reads. Instead, traders of the same goods were concentrated along one road, and the road took its name from their trade — at one point 67 roads, each named for what it sold. The street was the sign.\n\nMexico City's Mercado de Sonora signs the other way round, on the goods. Names are the pitch, and they are printed on the bottles: atrapahombres, \"trap men\"; ven a mi, \"come to me\"; miel de amor, \"honey of love\"; Amansa guapos, \"tame handsome men\". Around 2,000 people come each weekend for the section of the market given to amulets, candles, powders, Santería and Santa Muerte.\n\nAt Tha Phrachan in Bangkok the graphic that matters is not a sign but a document. A clay tablet's worth turns on which temple pressed it and which monk consecrated it, so the case carries a certificate and the buyer carries a loupe, and forgeries are common enough that expert authentication is routine.\n\n*Inference —* the pattern across all three is that amulet markets do not advertise what a charm does. They label origin, or they label desire, or they label nothing and let the street do it. This project has not read a published study of amulet-stall signage anywhere, so the generalisation is drawn from three descriptions and is marked as this project's own.",
  "today": "Khan el-Khalili's souvenir shops and the goldsmiths' souq beside them still run on the old zoning, trade by trade, in a district whose fixed stone shopfronts replaced mobile market stalls partly so the authorities could count and tax them. The signage gap is a gap in the record, not in the markets — set confidence low here and treat the picture as unfinished."
