  "story": "Wingstop's premise was narrow on purpose: wings as the order rather than the appetiser, a short menu, and a 1930s and 1940s pre-jet aviation room to sit in. The first franchise opened in 1997. By 2002 the company claimed two million wings served. Swad sold in 2003 with ninety restaurants open; Gemini Investors bought it, Roark Capital took it in 2010, and it went public in 2015 at $19 a share.\n\nHe told Nation's Restaurant News in March 2019, opening a full-service Southern restaurant called Porch Swing in Mesquite, Texas: \"My franchising days are in my rearview mirror.\" On that room's design: \"Everything is pretty well thought out. Even the soundtrack is curated.\" On its menu: \"I wanted to do a menu where everybody could sit down and read every word on the menu and pretty much understand it.\"\n\n*Inference —* the chain outgrew its founder's ownership by a long way. When he sold in 2003 it had ninety stores; the article that carried his rearview-mirror line, sixteen years later, counted more than 1,252.",
