"what": "A fried-fish carryout that ran thirty years at 12th and H Streets NE in Washington and now trades from Prince George's County, Maryland. Whiting on white or brown bread is the order it is known for; wings share the same fryer.",
"story": "Richard \"Dickie\" Shannon opened the carryout on H Street NE in 1990 with a friend named Horace. The counter sold fried whiting as a sandwich or a dinner plate, with baked macaroni and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, candied yams, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, corn on the cob and seasoned potatoes beside it.\n\nIt closed on 1 March 2020. Shannon put it on the neighbourhood changing around him: \"The customers here have been getting $100 tickets, $150 tickets, towed. And it's affected the business.\" He also said, flatly, \"Gentrification is cultural genocide.\" He was 82 and said he would play more golf. A Takoma shop and a food truck kept running.\n\nShannon died of complications of COVID-19 on Sunday 6 February 2022, aged 84. His son Rasheed Black, the business manager, told WTOP: \"I think people will remember him just making people laugh at the 12th Street location and here on Allentown Road.\" And: \"The main thing that he did was he would basically give people second chances.\" His wife of thirty-two years, Nancy Shannon, said much the same to NBC4: \"He gave everybody a chance. If they needed a job, even if they had a little blemish on their record, he would give them a chance.\" WTOP listed Camp Springs, Takoma Park, Glenarden and Waldorf as the shops carrying on.\n\n*Inference —* the fish counter and the wing counter are the same counter in this city. A D.C. carryout fries whiting, wings and shrimp in the same oil and sends mumbo out with all three; that is why a seafood shop sits in a set about wings.",
"today": "The Prince George's County tourism office lists the Camp Springs shop at 5601 Allentown Road, phone (301) 773-0140. *Tradition holds —* wings and wing dinners are on the board there; delivery listings carry them, and this project has not read a page from the business itself. No posted hours could be cited, so no day here is called open or closed."
