"what": "A single-payer system with an international side bolted on. National Health Insurance covers residents, hospitals run international medical centres for everyone else, and the state has promoted the sector since the late 2000s. No national count of international patients was read for this record, so this page carries none.",
"story": "Taiwan's measurable appearance in this subject during 2024 was as somebody else's source market. South Korea's health ministry recorded Taiwan as the fifth-largest country of origin among its 1.17 million foreign patients, and the fastest-growing of the five, up 550.6 per cent on the year.\n\n*Inference —* a rise of that size in twelve months, to a destination two and a half hours away selling dermatology and cosmetic work, is a travel story rather than a medical one: cheap flights, a weak yen and won, and a procedure that needs no admission. It says more about the direction of traffic in East Asia than any brochure about Taiwan as a destination does.\n\n*Trade practice —* what Taiwan itself sells to foreign patients is the harder end — living-donor liver transplantation, fertility treatment, and the screening admission that Chinese-speaking patients from across the region book in bulk. Pricing is per item, in New Taiwan dollars, and the international centre assembles the estimate.\n\nThe Ministry of Health and Welfare publishes an annual Taiwan Health and Welfare Report in English. No figure for international patients was read from it on this pass, which is a gap in this record rather than a finding about Taiwan.",
"how": "*Trade practice —* a non-resident pays the hospital's own schedule rather than the insurance tariff, which makes Taiwanese prices legible in a way single-payer systems usually are not. Hospital international centres handle the referral, the estimate and the interpreter; agencies are less central here than in Southeast Asia.",
"today": "As of 16 September 2026 this record carries no patient count and no price. Both are marked for verification."
