"what": "Colombia's capital and largest city, the country's medical as well as political centre, sitting at 2,640 metres on the Bogotá savanna. Its export trade is complex hospital work — cardiac, oncological, transplant and neurosurgical — sold mostly to patients from elsewhere in Colombia, from the Caribbean and from Central America, rather than to North Americans on a package.",
"story": "Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá publishes the clearest accreditation record of any institution in this batch: not a logo but a timeline. Its own page gives six Joint Commission International cycles — first accreditation in 2010, then reaccreditation in 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. That is fifteen unbroken years on a three-year cycle, each renewal named and dated.\n\n*Inference —* the timeline is worth more than the mark. An accreditation badge tells a reader that a hospital passed an inspection at some unstated moment; a published cycle list tells them when, how often, and whether anything lapsed. The Cancún hospital in this same batch prints its expiry dates and they have passed; the Bogotá one prints its renewal dates and they have not. Both are being more forthcoming than a hospital that prints a logo alone.\n\nBogotá's altitude is the other thing that distinguishes it. At 2,640 metres the arterial oxygen a patient arrives with is lower than at sea level, and a cardiac or respiratory case flying in from the coast is being asked to acclimatise before being operated on. No page in this project's sources quantifies that, and this record does not.",
"how": "Patients arrive by air at El Dorado and are admitted rather than accommodated: this is inpatient medicine. Colombian private hospitals bill per case and negotiate with foreign insurers where one exists. A non-resident coming for treatment whose stay is expected to run beyond ninety days needs a Colombian health visa, which is applied for through the Cancillería.",
"today": "As of 16 September 2026 Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá states six Joint Commission International cycles, the most recent in 2025."
