  "story": "This operation travels because of where the machine is, not what it costs. PTCOG, the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group, keeps the field's register; its public world map gave 128 particle therapy facilities in clinical operation worldwide when it was read for this record on 16 September 2026, and its list of individual facilities is behind a login. A 2026 review in Frontiers in Oncology, citing PTCOG, reports that \"by the end of 2024, there were over 120 operational proton therapy centers worldwide, primarily distributed across North America, Europe, and East Asia, with the total number of treated patients exceeding 450,000\". Its country table, whose own heading calls the figures approximate, gives 45 or more in the United States, 25 or more in Japan, 15 or more across the smaller European countries, 10 or more in China, eight in Germany, four each in the United Kingdom and France — and one each in Canada, Australia, India and the Middle East.\n\n*Inference —* that distribution is the whole of the subject here. A patient in a country with one centre, or none, is not choosing between a price at home and a price abroad. There is nothing at home to price.\n\nThe clearest case is a state doing the travelling. England's National Health Service began the Proton Overseas Programme in 2008 and sent patients to ProCure in Oklahoma City and to the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute while it built its own centres. Its patient guide says the medical costs are paid centrally, that \"the NHS will fund economy travel costs for the patient and a carer\", and that \"the NHS will not fund the cost of meals or refreshments\". Between 2008 and September 2020 the programme treated 830 patients for central nervous system, base of skull, spinal and paraspinal tumours, and 495 for tumours elsewhere. In the second group the median age was 11 and 70.3% were under 16. The UK centres at the Christie in Manchester and University College London Hospital have since opened; NHS National Services Scotland still states, on a page published 10 December 2025, that \"travel abroad may still be a requirement for some patients, depending upon individual clinical assessments\".\n\n*Trade practice —* the field calls the point where the beam stops the Bragg peak, after the physicist who described the effect. The Cancer Research UK page describes the physics without using the phrase.",
