  "story": "The claim is the families'. Pete Jones, who opened the Skylight Inn in 1947, learned the trade from the Dennis side of his family and liked to say that barbecue ran in his blood; his great-great-grandfather, he told Bob Garner, sold barbecue from a covered wagon in Ayden in the mid-1800s. The billboard outside the Skylight sets the tradition at 1830. Bum Dennis and his son Larry gave Rien Fertel the same story for the Southern Foodways Alliance in December 2011: Skilton Dennis selling smoked hog meat and cornbread from a wagon in 1830, and Otter Dennis founding the 'enigmatically-named' town. John Tanner's post on Bum's death counts the wagon-seller as a great-great-great-grandfather, 'add 4 or 5 more greats' — the arithmetic of a family story, not of a record. The Alliance's page for Sam Jones says the Dennis clan's history shows them as the first in North Carolina to serve pit barbecue publicly. *Inference —* Ayden was incorporated only in 1891, around a railroad depot on William Henry Harris's farm; a wagon in 1830 would have served the farms and churches of what became southern Pitt County, not a town. *Inference —* this project has seen no census, deed or grave for a Skilton Dennis selling barbecue in 1830; the date is held here as the families' and nothing more.",
