  "story": "Monk was a teenage carhop at a Lexington barbecue place, worked for Holland Tussey, and spent several years working directly under Warner Stamey at Stamey's in downtown Lexington — Stamey had bought Jess Swicegood's stand there in 1938 — so that his own pit stands two teachers from the courthouse tents of 1919. At twenty-six, in 1962, he bought a roadside parcel beside U.S. Highway 29/70 that had been Tussey's, built onto the small cafe on it, and opened Lexington Barbecue #1 with Sonny Hunneycutt; the partner left, and the joined name, Honeymonk, stayed on the town's tongue. In 1983 a politically connected local attorney asked whether he would cook for President Reagan, and he served barbecue to the heads of government at that year's economic summit in Williamsburg, Virginia, Margaret Thatcher and François Mitterrand among them. The James Beard Foundation made the restaurant an America's Classic in 2003, the same year as the Skylight Inn in Ayden. Garden & Gun found three generations at the pits in 2015: Wayne; Rick, who started at thirteen and is pitmaster, bookkeeper or janitor as the day requires; and Rick's son Nathan, who began in the kitchen at about sixteen. 'It's not a job. It's a way of life,' Rick said. The American Royal inducted Wayne Monk into its Barbecue Hall of Fame on September 14, 2019 — he 'set the standard that practically defines North Carolina barbecue', the citation said — and the new North Carolina Bar-B-Q Hall of Fame inducted him at Burlington on March 1, 2024.",
