Novena

PractitionerNine days, one prayer a day, often timed to end on a 19th. Naples kept a quick "flying novena" for students before exams.

Ask · Promise · Thank

PractitionerDevotion to Expedite runs as a bargain in three beats.

  1. Ask for one fast, specific thing, plainly.

  2. Promise what you will give, and when.

  3. Thank him in public once it comes, and pay what you promised. On Réunion the saying goes: one must pay him, and quickly.

New Orleans devotees printed their thanks as small notices in the newspaper; today they post them online. Make one.

PractitionerIn Brazil the promise is often a thousand prayer cards, printed and handed out: the promessa do milheiro. Print shops stock it at about R$20 a thousand.

DocumentedFanny Fleurié, stranded in Marseille by the 1918 flu, vowed him a statue if she got home. A bishop blessed the first one in Saint-Denis on 3 May 1931. The red comes from Tamil practice and the goddess Kali; he stands beside Hindu gods without merging into them. Islanders call him un malbar-catholique, a Tamil Catholic.

Who he was ท่านคือใคร

TraditionA Roman soldier, martyred at Melitene, now Malatya in Turkey, around 303. His feast is 19 April.

ScholarshipHis name stands twice in the old martyr list, at Rome and at Melitene. It may be a misreading of Elpidius; in Latin expeditus also means a soldier travelling light. Around 1905 Rome moved against unapproved pictures of him, and the devotion kept growing. The phrase used today: tolerated, not admitted.

Patron of urgent causes, of speed, of merchants and sailors, of students at exams.
