What it is
Two pigments for two jobs: awheto, a caterpillar fungus, for the body; ngarehu, burnt timber, for the darker face colour.
The long version
Soot from burnt kauri gum, mixed with fat, was used as well. The pigment was kept in carved oko vessels, buried between uses and handed on.
