placeThe Ukok Plateau

Altai, Siberia — where the ice kept a tattooed shoulder for 2,400 years

49.3000, 87.5000 · OpenStreetMap

What it is

The high plateau on the Russian–Chinese–Mongolian frontier where frozen Pazyryk burials preserved tattooed skin.

The long version

Water got into the burial chamber through a robber's shaft, froze, and sealed everything inside a block of ice under stone and permafrost. Clothing, wood, horses and skin came out of it.
