What it is
The same needle that sewed the clothing, threaded with sinew blackened in soot and drawn under the skin.
The long version
Skin stitching leaves the pigment on the thread's path. It is also the reason the practice belonged to women: the needle case was theirs, the skill was theirs, and sewing was the technology the household ran on.
