“ฤๅษี” คือนักพรต “ดัด” คือยืดหรือดัด “ตน” คือตัวเอง ฤๅษีดัดตนจึงเป็นท่าที่นักพรตใช้ดัดกายตนเอง ปี พ.ศ. 2379 รัชกาลที่ 3 โปรดให้หล่อรูปฤๅษีดัดตน 80 ท่าไว้ที่วัดโพธิ์ พร้อมโคลงบอกสรรพคุณจารึกบนแผ่นหินอ่อน ปี 2381 มีสมุดไทยดำ “สมุดภาพฤๅษีดัดตนแก้โรคต่างๆ 80 รูป” เก็บอยู่ที่หอสมุดแห่งชาติ ทั้งระบบรวมท่าแปรแล้วมีเกือบ 200 ท่า“Reusi” is a hermit, “dat” to stretch or adjust, “ton” oneself. In 1836 King Rama III commissioned 80 Reusi Dat Ton statues for Wat Pho, each with a poem on a marble tablet naming its use; an 1838 black-paper khoi manuscript of the 80 is held at the National Library in Bangkok.
