By the next year bear claws were on the breakfast menu at Hamburger's in Los Angeles, then the largest department store west of Chicago. The Sacramento Bee reports no earlier public reference; a Sacramento historian cautioned against crowning the city as the origin on that evidence alone.\n\nThe phrase is Western American English — the U.S. Regional Dialect Survey asks about it by name. Denmark calls the pastry a kam, Germany a Kamm; France has a patte d'ours, made in the Alps in 1982.\n\nA bear claw cutter was patented into use in 1950 by James Fennell, which is when the shape stopped being purely a knife job.",
