  "story": "After the United States entered the war in 1917 the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France, which concluded that enlisted men's needs could be met by canteens — \"huts\" — serving baked goods and providing writing supplies, stamps and mending. About 250 volunteers went. Baking was hard in abandoned buildings near the front, so two volunteers, Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance, turned to donuts. They were an instant hit. Sheldon wrote of one day: \"Today I made 22 pies, 300 donuts, 700 cups of coffee.\"\n\nThe women became known to the servicemen as Donut Girls. A misconception ties the donuts to the word doughboy; the term was in use decades earlier.",
