  "story": "Donuts belonged to autumn before anyone sold them at an orchard: the slaughter season produced the surplus fat you fried in. Cider donuts themselves go back at least to the late nineteenth century — a 1901 piece in The Buffalo Enquirer has them at Halloween parties.\n\nWhat made them a roadside business was Adolph Levitt's 1921 machine, which fried rings of batter methodically and in public. Cider-selling farm stands took it up quickly. The Doughnut Corporation of America may have sold the first commercial cider donut, a \"sweet cider doughnut\", in 1951.\n\nThe season runs with the apples: September into November or December.",
