The fast-food chains followed — McDonald's in the late 1980s, Sonic, Hardee's and Carl's Jr. through the 1990s, Taco Bell in 2014.\n\nThe donut shop sits in the same slot as those chains: open early, one window, a driver in a truck. *Inference —* a counter already selling coffee at five in the morning has a griddle's worth of spare capacity and a customer who wants something salty, which is the same argument the California shops make about egg rolls.",
