Psycho Donuts opened in Campbell, California in March 2009 with a straitjacket on the wall and donuts named after mental-health conditions, which has drawn objection. Doughnut Plant, from 1994, took the opposite route: invention aimed at pastry rather than at spectacle.\n\n*Inference —* the novelty shop's real product is a photograph, which is why it prices above a strip-mall counter and why it ages faster.",
