The Bridge Vialขวดเทียบ
A friend's freeze-dried vial went to Janoshik, a testing lab in Prague, and came back named, weighed and graded. The test used it up. Its nine sister vials are still here in Chiang Mai. This page walks through how a Thai lab can use one of those sisters to check each new batch, and what that costs next to sending every batch to Prague.

Freeze-dried (lyophilized): the liquid is frozen and the ice pulled off under vacuum, leaving a small cake of powder you mix with water later. Most such vials in this trade hold peptides, short chains of amino acids.

Yes, three ways. Each one answers a different share of the question. First a word: chromatography pushes the sample through a long thin tube, the column. Each substance takes its own time to reach the far end, its retention time. A mass spectrometer (the MS) waits at the end and weighs what comes out.

GC-MS shatters each molecule and weighs the pieces. The pattern is a fingerprint, searched against a library of about 300,000 (NIST). If A is in the library, the lab can name it without ever having run it.

A high-resolution MS (Q-TOF or Orbitrap) weighs a molecule to a few parts per million. The lab works out what A should weigh from its formula and compares. A second stage, MS/MS, breaks a peptide link by link, so the pieces spell its sequence.

Same machine, same day, a sample known to be A beside the unknown. Same retention time and same spectrum: same substance. Of the three, only this one also says how much.

GC or LC?GC หรือ LC?
GC-MS (gas chromatography) starts by turning the sample to gas in an oven near 300 °C. Small sturdy molecules, such as steroids and most pill drugs, fly through. Peptides char. For peptides labs use liquid instead: HPLC (liquid chromatography read by UV light) or LC-MS (liquid chromatography with a mass spectrometer).

When Beer calls a lab, ask for HPLC or LC-MS as well as GC-MS. For a peptide, GC-MS alone will not do the job.

Tadalafil (Cialis) and anabolic steroids are small molecules. That changes three things. GC-MS works, and anti-doping labs have used it on steroids for decades. Both are in the NIST library, so the fingerprint match works. And the lab can buy a certified reference standard, a pure sample sold with its purity stated, so no bridge vial is needed: the lab runs your tablet or oil beside the standard and counts milligrams directly. Both sit on Thai pharmacy shelves, so a branded pack from a known maker can serve as a cheaper working standard, the way the bridge vial does for peptides.

For a tablet or an oil, "purity" means two numbers: what the active substance is, and how much is in each tablet or millilitre. Thailand's Department of Medical Sciences already tests supplements for hidden tadalafil and sildenafil. CMU Science lists GC-MS quantity with your method and spectrum at ฿3,600 for the first sample and ฿2,600 for the next. Janoshik's anabolic steroid screen is reported at US$120.

Labs send a certificate of analysis (COA): one page, a table and a chromatogram. This one is drawn for the page; the fields match the ones people get from the labs they use now.

- Client. Who sent the vial. When the seller sent it, the seller chose which vial. A vial a buyer took off their own shelf, like the friend's, speaks more for that buyer's batch.

- Lot. Match it to the label on your vial and box. A certificate for another lot says nothing about yours.

- Mol wt. Check it against PubChem. Peptides often come as a salt; each TFA (trifluoroacetate, left over from making the peptide) adds about 114 to the weight, and the milligrams may count the salt too.

- Method. Two detectors: UV sees nearly everything in the sample; the MS weighs it. Identity comes from the MS, purity should come from UV.

- Identity. "Conforms" means the measured mass matched the expected one. Check the m/z yourself with the checker below.

- Purity. The main peak's share of all peaks. Ask which trace it came from.

- The chromatogram. "m/z = 1029.40–1029.41" means this trace shows only molecules of that one mass. Anything else in the vial is invisible here, so a single clean peak is expected and says nothing about purity. The UV trace or full scan (TIC) shows the rest. RT 2.9 is this lab's column; a Thai lab's time will differ, so compare against the bridge vial run the same day.

- Dates. Peptides age. A certificate from a year ago describes the vial as it was then.

- Certificate number. Ask the lab to confirm it; some labs offer an online check by number or key. Copies of certificates get edited.

An LC-MS sees a molecule carrying extra hydrogens (each +1 charge, the z). It reads mass divided by charge: m/z = (M + z × 1.007) ÷ z. Type the certificate's numbers.

Sodium and formic acid (from the liquid the lab runs) sometimes ride along on the molecule. Mol wt on a certificate is usually the average weight; m/z is usually the lightest isotope, so a gap under about 1 at peptide sizes still fits.

Limitsข้อจำกัด
- Batch B can be only as right as Janoshik's number for batch A. An error there carries forward.
- Sister vials vary a little in fill. The run measures B against the bridge vial, not against the vial Prague tested.
- Freeze-dried peptides break down slowly, even frozen. An old bridge vial reads low and makes B look rich. Sending a vial back to Janoshik now and then resets the chain.
- A report covers the vials the lab ran, not the whole batch. Two vials of B say more than one.
- Same cap colour is a weak clue. A lot code on the label, the box and the order record is a stronger one.

Bridge route per batch: two vials at the Thai lab (bridge + new). Setup ฿15,400 is CMU Science's "new method, secondary standard" line; a lab that already runs this peptide may charge less or nothing. ฿2,700 is CMU Science's HPLC and GC-MS per-sample price with a method on hand.

Labsแล็บ
103 Thai labs with GC-MS, mapped, with posted prices: GC-MS: Who Tests It. Of those 103, 19 name LC-MS on their own pages and 8 more name HPLC. In the north: CMU Agriculture (LC-TOF-MS/MS, ฿10,000, an exact-mass first look), CMU Science STSC (HPLC, ฿2,700), the Department of Medical Sciences centre in Chiang Rai (HPLC) and AMARC Lamphun (LC-MS/MS). In Bangkok, Siriraj's SiMPC runs LC-MS/MS and ion-mobility MS for research. Most other LC-MS on the list is triple-quad pesticide and drug work, which suits tadalafil and steroids; a peptide needs a lab willing to set up a method.
