Signs and objectsThe 1,864 sign

ป้าย 1,864 โค้ง

The only road sign in Thailand that people stop and photograph themselves next to.

What it is

A board by the road with a number on it, and the shirts, mugs and stickers that carry the same number through Pai.

The long version

Inference — the interesting thing about this object is what it does. A route number tells you where you are. This one tells you what you have survived, and it is the only piece of roadside furniture on the circuit that people queue to be photographed beside.

Nobody publishes the survey behind it. But counting every change of turning direction on the map of the same route gets to about 1,310 from below, on a trace that physically cannot see a bend shorter than sixty metres — so the number is the right size, and the sign is doing its job.

Inference — what it is really advertising is not arithmetic. It is that this is a road you do rather than a road you take.
