What it is

The largest group in the hills of the province after the Shan, spanning the Thai–Myanmar border, and the people whose villages line Route 108 south of Mae Hong Son.

The long version

The Wikipedia article on the province is explicit that the Karen are not a single group but a mix of closely related tribes, and lists them among the seven groups making up 63 per cent of the provincial population alongside Lahu, Lisu, Lua, Miao, Chinese Yunnanese and Pa-O. Karen have their own spoken and written language.

Among the smallest of the Karen groups in Thailand are the Kayan Lahwi, whose women are recognised by the brass coils worn around the neck.

Inference — the point worth carrying while riding Route 108: the roadside villages between Khun Yuam and Mae Sariang are people's homes and workplaces, and the difference between passing through respectfully and treating a village as scenery is mostly speed and cameras.
