Taking cuttings from many vines in a block you already trust, instead of ordering one numbered clone from a nursery. You keep the block's variation, and whatever virus it carries.

How it is done Tradition

A grower walks the old block at harvest, marks the vines that ripen well and crop lightly, and grafts from them. The pay-off is diversity inside one vineyard; the risk is leafroll and fanleaf, which is precisely what clonal certification was invented to stop.
