Wing Bowl was Morganti's idea, born of the Eagles not going to a Super Bowl any time soon — and, by one account, of being sick of watching the Buffalo Bills go and lose. The first one, in 1993, was two combatants in the lobby of the Wyndham Franklin Plaza. Joan Brewington turned up in a bathrobe and boxing gloves, punching the air like a prizefighter, which set the tone for everything after. Carmen Cordero won and took home a hibachi.
The qualifying system ran through Morganti. To get in you performed an eating stunt live on the morning show with him judging: twenty cups of oatmeal, 3.75 pounds of creamed spinach with 3.75 pounds of hot sauce, five Big Macs. He threw out stunts he called cheating — dipping bread in a drink to get it down, pulling hot dogs off their buns — and he disliked drinking stunts. When Joey Chestnut offered a gallon of milk, the hosts thought it too easy, and it took El Wingador vouching for the difficulty to get the offer accepted, with five minutes on the clock.
In 2009 he granted one dispensation, letting Wing Bowl 8 champion "Tollman Joe" into an all-amateur field without a stunt, on the grounds that he was the only amateur ever to beat El Wingador.
