Carolina Barbecue

an event · NCHillsborough Hog Day

also: Hog Day · Hog Day Festival · Hillsborough Hog Day Festival

A two-day barbecue festival and cook-off at River Park in downtown Hillsborough, Orange County, held since 1983 — the oldest continuing barbecue festival in North Carolina, by the Daily Tar Heel's account — and run since 2014 by the Orange County Optimist Club as a fundraiser for children's programs. A Friday evening opens it; Saturday brings the cook-off, live music, a car show, a fun run and the Pigs on Parade. In 2019 the count was 27 cooking teams, more than 100 vendors and a collective three tons of barbecue; the 2025 festival, September 13 and 14, came two months after Tropical Storm Chantal flooded the Eno riverfront and lost its 5K to the water.

Hog Day was the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce's festival for thirty-one years, drawing up to 35,000 people as the county's largest festival, until the chamber's board voted in January 2014 that it was not 'an adequate use of resources' for the chamber's mission. Craig Lloyd, the chamber's former executive director and a Hog Day hand since he won a design contest more than thirty years ago, gathered the volunteers into a new Orange County Optimist Club and put the festival on that June 20 and 21 at the Efland Ruritan Club under the theme 'Bringing Home the Bacon', because it was '100% developed and produced by local volunteers'; after two years in Efland it came home to River Park in 2016, the thirty-fourth festival, now in September. Hurricane Florence pushed 2018 to a make-up weekend on November 2 and 3; the pandemic cancelled 2020 and 2021; 2022 was the return. The cook-off carries a North Carolina Pork Council contest alongside the festival's own — James Catlett and Brittany Thompson took the two first places in 2025 — and the proceeds go to youth: Future Farmers of America, the Hillsborough 4-H club and a Holy Family Catholic Church youth group in 2025. Lloyd, now the club's president, is the 'Godfather of Hog Day' on the festival's site; Al Hartkopf chairs it.
