BikesThe 250–450 trail bike
รถวิบาก 250–450
The one that makes the unsealed sections stop being a decision.
Clemens Anderlitschka · CC BY-SA 4.0What it is
A KLX, a CRF, a D-Tracker, a Versys-X: long travel, 21- or 19-inch front wheel, upright, light, and rented all over Chiang Mai.
The long version
What it is like. Tall, light and upright, which on a road with this many blind bends means you can see over the bank and around the corner before the corner arrives. The long suspension turns broken tarmac into texture rather than an event. It is the bike that makes every side road on the map a live option, and there are a great many side roads.
On a circuit that is sealed almost end to end, a trail bike's advantage is not the dirt. It is the suspension travel over broken edges, the ground clearance over the concrete water bars on steep sections, and the fact that dropping it at walking pace on a wet driveway costs nothing.
Inference — it is also the machine that makes Route 1263 and the side roads to the villages a decision you make on the day rather than one you make when you rent. What you give up is a comfortable 100 km/h on the four-lane section of Route 108 out of Chiang Mai, where a tall single-cylinder is buzzy and tiring.
