What it is

The largest town on the southern leg and the natural overnight between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai. Teak-era shophouses, Burmese-style wats, and a river.

The long version

Mae Sariang district reaches west to the Salween, which is the border, and the road on to Mae Sam Laep is the way to see it.

Inference — the reason to give Mae Sariang a night rather than treating it as a lunch stop is arithmetic. Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai in one day by Route 108 is a very long day on a mountain road; broken at Mae Sariang it is two comfortable ones. Riders on a tight schedule push through and arrive after dark, which is the single most avoidable mistake on this circuit.

Now

Quiet, cheap, and the last town of any size before the long empty run north or the long fast run east.
