Cocoa in the batter, not on the outside — the iced one is a different animal.

A cake ring with cocoa in the batter, glazed or sugared. Dark, dense, and sweeter than the plain cake ring on the published numbers.

The story Cited · wp-cake-doughnut

Cake donuts hold a flavour the way raised dough does not, and chocolate is the oldest of the cake flavours in an American case. USDA publishes it as its own food — "Doughnuts, cake-type, chocolate, sugared or glazed" — separate from the chocolate-coated plain cake donut, which is a plain ring with icing on it and a different set of numbers.

How it is done Cited · wp-cake-doughnut

Cocoa into a cake batter, dropped and fried like any cake ring, then glazed while warm.

Read from this page, 2026-09-17. USDA SR Legacy 174993, "Doughnuts, cake-type, chocolate, sugared or glazed", published per 100 g and scaled here to the portion USDA itself lists as "doughnut, medium (approx 3" dia)" — 42 g. No ingredient list is published for these generic rows, so the ingredient ranks are null. A shop's own donut is not this donut; this is the closest published measurement of the kind. Every donut measured is on the donut page.
