The story Inference
The line is blurrier than the phrase suggests. A shop can buy its mix from a national flour company, carry a franchised name on the window, and still be owned outright by the family inside it — every Daylight Donuts store is independently owned and operated, and there are roughly 950 of them. A Spudnut sign may outlive the franchise that sold it. And a single family may hold three shops and run them all itself.
This project counts a shop as independent when no company owns it; the sign on the window is not the test.
