Wing Country

a thing that happens · NYNational Chicken Wing Day

also: Chicken Wing Day · July 29

A food day on 29 July, kept by bars, chains and marketing departments across the United States. It comes from one city and one piece of paper: in 1977 Buffalo issued a proclamation honouring Anchor Bar co-owner Frank Bellissimo and declared 29 July Chicken Wing Day. The word national was added later, by everyone else.

The story Cited · web-national-chicken-wing-day

Mayor Stan Makowski signed it. The fragment of the wording that circulates says "thousands of pounds of chicken wings are consumed by Buffalonians in restaurants and taverns throughout the city each week" — a claim about how much the city was already eating, thirteen years after the night the Anchor Bar dates its invention to.

Inference — the date has no argument attached to it, which is probably why it spread. A proclamation that honours one man in one bar became a national date that any restaurant can mark, and the chains that mark it with a free-wing offer have no stake in who invented the wing.

The full proclamation text is not in this project's sources. Two pages carry the same quoted fragment and the same mayor's name: a Buffalo radio station's account from 29 July 2020 and the site that promotes the day.

No organiser, no venue, no ticket. Restaurants run offers, radio stations run features, and the date turns up in food calendars. Buffalo's own wing festival keeps to Labor Day weekend instead, five weeks later.

Today Tradition

Marked on 29 July. Tradition holds — Buffalo bars mark it, and this project has found no ordinance behind the observance beyond the 1977 proclamation itself.
