Kepley's Bar-B-Q and the pits around it.

A High Point, Guilford County, barbecue stand in a surplus World War II Quonset hut — a half-cylinder of corrugated steel — opened in June 1948 by Hayden Kepley on North Main Street and closed on February 8, 2025 after 77 years. Bob Burleson came to work there as a sixteen-year-old curb boy the year it opened, bought it with Charlie Johnson when Kepley retired in 1962, and ran it until his death in May 2022 at ninety; his daughter Susan Burleson closed it when she could not staff the hours. It served chopped, vinegary pork with tangy red slaw on a bun, hushpuppies, and 85-cent coffee with refills.

Hayden Kepley bought an Army Quonset hut in 1948 and started selling barbecue from it; Bob Burleson, newly motherless at sixteen, arrived that summer as a curb boy. In 1962 Kepley sold to Burleson and his son-in-law Charlie Johnson; Johnson retired in 2001 and Susan Burleson became her father's co-owner, then sole owner after he died in May 2022. The menu board was hand-painted wood and did not change for decades; the hut got green awnings outside and wood paneling within. The High Point Enterprise reported in January 2025 that after four longtime waitresses retired Susan Burleson could not find people willing to work the hours — 'I would have to work up here all day and night, and I'm just too old to do that' — and would not sell, because new owners 'would run it the way they want to run it, and it just wouldn't be Kepley's anymore.' The last day was February 8, 2025. Stephanie Hunt, who grew up nearby, wrote its farewell in Garden & Gun two days before.
