The long version
The licence. Thailand recognises the International Driving Permit, issued under the 1949 and 1968 conventions, alongside a valid home licence. A permit is a translation of a licence, not a substitute for one, and the motorcycle entitlement has to be on the home licence for the permit to carry it. Inference — whether a given insurer pays a claim when the rider held no motorcycle entitlement is the question that makes this worth getting right, and the answer is not usually generous.
The deposit. Tradition holds — many shops ask to hold a passport against the bike. Handing over a passport is a decision with consequences that have nothing to do with motorcycles, and some shops will take a cash deposit instead if asked. Ask before you need to.
The photographs. Before riding away, photograph every existing scratch, the tyres including the date code if it is legible, the odometer, the chain, and the contract itself. Inference — this is the single cheapest thing on this page and it resolves the most common dispute.
The three things that go wrong. Tyres older than they look — check the sidewall date, not the tread. Brakes that were fine in town and are not fine on a ten-kilometre descent — which is what the Samoeng day is for. And a bike that is not permitted to leave the province under the contract, which is a clause worth actually reading on a trip that crosses into Mae Hong Son.
Ask about the bag. Most shops will hold your main luggage while you ride. Get it written on the agreement.
