A bag of holes is the only thing in the shop named after an absence.
The centres cut out of ring donuts, fried and sold by the bag — or, more often now, made on purpose from the same dough or batter and never cut from anything.

When a cutter with two concentric circles came into use around 1870, every ring made a small disc of dough as a by-product. That disc could be fried and sold, or thrown back into the batch. The name sticks to the piece that was removed, not the space it left, which is why the thing you buy is the opposite of what you asked for.

Cut rings; collect the centres; fry them a shorter time than the rings, since they are smaller and rounder; roll in sugar or glaze in a tumbler.
