Pączki are traditionally eaten in Poland on the Thursday before Lent. In Polish communities in the United States the observance moved to Fasnacht Day — the Tuesday — which puts Polish and Pennsylvania Dutch traditions on the same morning.
Hamtramck, Michigan, a city surrounded by Detroit with deep Polish roots, is the best-known American centre of the day.
