Voodoo Doughnut opened in Portland in May 2003, night-only until 2006, with a logo carrying Baron Samedi. Psycho Donuts opened in Campbell, California in March 2009 with a straitjacket on the wall and donuts named after mental-health conditions, which has drawn objection. Doughnut Plant, from 1994, took the opposite route: invention aimed at pastry rather than at spectacle.
