regionWillamette Valley

Three and a half million acres of Oregon between the Coast Range and the Cascades, of which a thin band of hillside grows pinot noir. Eleven AVAs now sit inside it.
The story Cited
David Lett planted pinot noir at Dundee in 1965 against the advice of everyone at Davis, who said Oregon was too cold and too wet. His 1975 Eyrie South Block Reserve placed tenth in a 1979 Paris tasting, Robert Drouhin re-ran the comparison in Beaune the following year, and the Burgundians started buying land. Adelsheim chaired the committee that petitioned for the AVA in 1983.
How it is done Cited
Cool and wet, with rain that arrives near harvest and decides the vintage. Growers pick on the forecast as much as on sugar.
Today Cited
Pinot noir covered 24,729 acres of Oregon in 2022 and brought the highest price per ton of any variety in the state.
