Russell Wendell, a donut machine salesman, founded a chain of drive-in shops called Big Donut in the late 1940s; the first opened in Westmont in 1951 and the second — this building — in 1952. Wendell moved on to his Pup 'N' Taco chain and sold the Inglewood shop in 1976 to Robert Eskow, who renamed it after his son Randy. Eskow sold it in 1978 to Ron and Larry Weintraub, who kept the name. It changed hands again in 2015.
Four of Wendell's big donuts survive; a fifth became a bagel. At their height there were ten Do-Nut Drive-Ins carrying 22-foot donuts, and the opening of the first one in December 1949 had clowns, jugglers, free coffee and a trapeze artist swinging through the hole.
Today Inference
The rooftop donut gets photographed more than anything else in the trade, and the shop now runs additional locations under the same name.
