Tha Phrachan is the market Thai writing on amulets names first when it names any. Wikipedia's account puts it plainly: famous markets for amulets include Tha Phrachan Market next to Thammasat University, and rare pieces often require expert authentication because forgeries are common.

What the loupes are for is the trade's central problem. A phra khrueang is valued by which temple pressed it, which monk consecrated it, and when — facts that live in the clay's texture, the mould's flaws and a certificate, not in the image on the front. Tradition holds — the specialist who reads those tells for a fee is as much a part of this market as the seller.

The scale is not small. When the Jatukham Rammathep amulet peaked in 2007, that single type's market reached twenty billion baht in a year before the bubble burst in late 2007, leaving stock that could be had cheap. Inference — a market that can move that much in twelve months is a financial market with devotional objects in it, and the argument over which of those two things it mainly is runs among Thai commentators, not between Thais and outsiders.
