The story Cited · wp-dunkin-donuts

Bill Rosenberg opened the Open Kettle in 1948 and renamed it Dunkin' Donuts in May 1950. Franchising started in 1955. Allied Lyons, Baskin-Robbins' holding company, acquired the chain in 1990; its purchase of Mister Donut — founded by Rosenberg's former partner Harry Winokur — and the conversion of those shops drove North American growth the same year. Dawn Donuts went the same way.

Today Inference

New England independents compete on frying on site, which is the difference the chain's scale cannot copy shop by shop.
