a wordatomic
also: atomic wings · nuclear · triple atomic
Always last on the heat list, and usually printed in red.
Top of a house heat ladder, and a word that only means something inside one bar's list. Wingstop's own description of its Atomic flavour is "It's the hottest we've got. Find out for yourself" — Spice Level 5, the end of its scale. An atomic at one counter can be milder than a hot at another, because nothing standardises the rungs.
First seen. 1989 as a business name: Adam Lippin opened Atomic Wings in New York City that year, by the company's own account of its thirtieth anniversary in 2019. That dates the word's use for a wing business, not its first use as a heat level, which this project could not date
Inference — the ladder needs a top rung that sounds like consequence rather than measurement. Mild, medium and hot describe; atomic threatens. That is why the next rung up is usually a repetition — triple atomic, atomic scorpion — rather than a new word. Cited · web-atomic-wings-30th

The word carries a whole apparatus with it. Bars and restaurants make an extra-hot sauce specifically so there is something to fail at, and reward whoever finishes with a photograph on the wall or the website, a commemorative T-shirt, a free meal, or some combination.
Quaker Steak & Lube runs the form at its most elaborate: its Atomic Scorpion sauce is published at 800,000 Scoville heat units, entrants sign a standard waiver, silicone gloves stay on, no bathroom breaks, and the finishers get a free t-shirt and their names on a chalkboard. Drinks are allowed, and there is no clock.
Inference — the waiver is the point of the word. A signature turns an order into an event, and an event is what gets photographed, which is what the wall is for.
How it is done Tradition
Ordered by someone else's dare, eaten with a dairy dip within reach — blue cheese or ranch, both of which cut capsaicin better than beer does. Kitchens usually serve it in a small count and usually will not sauce a whole basket.
