An Asheville barbecue house on Merrimon Avenue with a second room at Biltmore Park, opened in 2007 by Jeff Miller and named for his grandmother and his daughter. Jeff and Ashley Miller own it. Pork butts, ribs, whole chickens, brisket and turkey come off a smoker that a 2011 account had running hickory coals around the clock; the sauce is the Coastal Plain's vinegar rather than a mountain sweet one. Macaroni and cheese is on the board because the daughter it is half named for likes it.

The story Cited · web-ourstate-luellas-2011
Jeff Miller opened Luella's in 2007, naming it for his grandmother and for his six-year-old daughter. The first room was in south Asheville by two 2017 accounts, and Merrimon Avenue came in 2009, mid-recession; he later bought the Merrimon property. Explore Asheville's profile of him says he owns the business with his wife Ashley Miller, and a 2017 piece has the two of them beginning a hunt for a second site in 2014; the Biltmore Park room opened in spring 2016 and the business marked ten years in 2017. The restaurant's own pages name only Jeff, as owner and pit boss, which is the asymmetry a reader should know about before deciding what the ownership line means. The fire is the other open question. The only description of it found anywhere is from Our State in August 2011, which watched the kitchen manager open the heavy doors of a smoker cycling meat over hickory coals twenty-four hours a day. Every page since — the restaurant's own, the tourism listings, the 2017 features — is silent on fuel, and none says gas or electric either. Inference — silence across fifteen years of copy is not a change of method; it is copy that stopped mentioning the method.

Pork butts, racks of ribs, whole chickens, beef brisket and turkey go through the smoker; the chopped pork comes with an eastern vinegar-based sauce, which is a Coastal Plain sauce carried into the mountains. Ribs are cut St. Louis style. The sides are the reason the daughter's name is on the sign: the macaroni and cheese is hers. Both rooms run eleven to nine, seven days.
