This area is home to many ethnic groups, each with its own language, dress and customs. Several communities have lived in the hills for generations.

Many hill villages welcome visitors to learn about their way of life. People farm on rotation, keep animals and weave by hand in the patterns of each group.

Hill coffee is a major product. Arabica grows on the high slopes and gives good beans; many growers process and roast their own, selling in villages and towns.

Tea replaced opium in many places, above all at Mae Salong. Terraced tea gardens mark the hills, and the tea sells both at home and abroad.

Crafts — cloth, silver and basketry — are sold by the people who make them in markets and villages. Buying directly puts the money in the maker's hands, without a middleman.
