The Mekong is the great artery of the region, slow and broad as it passes here, while the Ruak is a small stream that flows down to meet it. Their meeting is the heart of the Golden Triangle.

The Mekong carries cargo boats trading between countries and passenger boats for visitors. Small long-tail boats take people along the shores to the meeting point of three countries.

The Mekong holds hundreds of fish species, including the giant catfish, among the largest freshwater fish in the world. Fishing along the river is a livelihood passed down on both shores.

Riverside markets sell goods from both shores — vegetables, fruit, dried fish and crafts. Some traders cross the water to sell, a long-running border commerce.

Sunrise and sunset over the river draw the most viewers. As the sun rises and falls, gold light reflects on the water and the hills of three countries stand in layers of shadow.
