Dundes studied English at Yale, spent two years maintaining artillery on a ship in the Mediterranean, then took a folklore doctorate at Indiana under Richard Dorson. Berkeley hired him into anthropology in 1963 and he stayed until he collapsed while teaching a graduate seminar on 30 March 2005.
His definition is the part that reaches into these records. Dundes wrote in 1969 that any group of people sharing a common linking factor, an urban group such as a labor union for instance, can and does have folklore, and that 'folk' is a flexible concept which can refer to a nation or to a single family. The critical issue, he said, is which groups in fact have traditions. Inference — that is the sentence that lets a challenge coin, a phone charm and an exam charm sit in the same atlas as a Middle Kingdom scarab without special pleading.
He insisted that collecting without theory is wasted work, and said so to his own field at the American Folklore Society in 2004. His students in the introductory course each had to collect, identify and analyse forty items; about 500,000 items are housed in the Berkeley Folklore Archives as a result.
He was also the most publicly argued-with folklorist of his generation. His 1980 presidential address on German culture, published as "Life is Like a Chicken Coop Ladder", drew a reaction strong enough that he stayed away from the society's annual conference for years, and the linguist Anatol Stefanowitsch in 2012 called it "unstructured, poorly argued and flimsily sourced" and "methodologically flawed because he only looked for evidence supporting his theory, and not — as even a folklorist should — for evidence against his theory". His psychoanalytic essay on American football earned him death threats. This atlas reports the quarrel and does not take a side in it.

The casebooks he edited are still the fastest way into a contested subject — the evil eye in 1992, the walled-up wife in 1996, the blood libel legend in 1991 — because each prints the opposing readings side by side instead of choosing. A donation from an anonymous former student endowed a Distinguished Professorship of Folkloristics at Berkeley, which is why the subject survived his retirement.
