The route

Westward, into the afternoon sun in the cool season. Leave early or accept it.

↺ Counter-clockwise

Eastward in the morning, sun behind. The better half of this leg's bargain.

What it is

Fifty-two kilometres, a hundred and ninety curves, and a long drop into the Mae Hong Son valley at the end.

The long version

Inference — 51.5 kilometres, 190 curves at a 25-degree threshold, 3.74 a kilometre. On paper the gentlest of the three 1095 sections; in practice the one with the most sustained descent.

This is the leg the light argument is about. Ridden westward in the afternoon in the cool season the sun sits at the end of the road, on two lanes, with oncoming traffic, for the last hour. Ridden eastward in the morning it is behind you. Inference — it is the clearest single reason in the whole clockwise-versus-counter-clockwise question to consider going the other way round, and almost nobody raises it.

The descent is long. On an automatic, stop twice on it.
