หมายเหตุThe source gives no origin date. 1800 is the earliest the source attaches a century to — European visitors' interest in Fante dolls 'particularly during the 1800s' — and is therefore a date about collectors, not about carvers. *Inference* — the practice is older than the collecting; this project has read no source that dates it.

เรื่องราว

Akua'ba come from western Ghana and nearby, and are particularly associated with the Fanti, part of the Akan group of peoples in Ghana and Ivory Coast. Young women seeking to conceive carry them, and carry them also so that the children they have will be good-looking.

When the figure is not in use it is not put away: it is ritually washed and cared for in the homestead, which is why writers describing the practice reach for the phrase sympathetic magic — the doll is treated the way the wanted child would be.

Other peoples in the region carve their own. The Kru and the Igbo have distinctive styles of fertility figure, used in similar ways.

The form crossed the Atlantic. Akua'ba were taken to the Americas by enslaved Africans, where they stood for a connection to home and were used as good-luck charms.

Inference — the collecting came early and it came in volume. Europeans visiting Africa in the 1800s were highly interested in Fante dolls, and that interest is why the figure is in so many European museums; what a museum case holds here, as with the Kongo material, is a record of nineteenth-century European taste as much as of Akan practice.

Carved in wood. Washed and cared for in the homestead when not being carried. The sources read here name no maker's restriction and no consecration rite, and this record does not supply one from a neighbouring tradition.

Both things at once, and the tradition's own account says so. Akua'ba are now more commonly seen as mass-produced works of art or souvenirs than as heirlooms in ritual use — and traditional use continues in some areas among the Fante and other Akan peoples. The shape has also become a general sign of good luck, detached from conception.
