Japanese 携帯 keitai, 'portable', used on its own for a mobile phone, plus English strap borrowed as ストラップ sutorappu
The Japanese account calls the strap 現代の根付 — the netsuke of the present day, after the carved toggle that anchored a cord to a kimono sash. That is the tradition's own comparison, not this project's. อ้างอิง

หมายเหตุ1995 is the Product Liability Law the Japanese account names in one of the explanations it records for the strap's spread. It is a theory reported by that source, not a documented first strap, and nothing read here dates a first one. The dated events downstream are firmer: the iPhone 3GS with no attachment slot in 2008, and the Pimp Your Phones collection in 2018.

This started as a safety feature and turned into a charm rack, and the sequence is documented.

The Japanese account gives the mechanism first: handsets carried a ストラップホール, a strap hole, and a thin loop was passed through it. One explanation it records for why straps spread in Japan is the Product Liability Law of 1995: carriers told users to put a hand through the strap so the phone would not be dropped. 落下防止 — fall prevention. That is a claim about gravity, and it is the only claim in this record that nobody argues with.

Then the hole filled up. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, hanging ten or more straps at once was a fashion among young people in Japan, to the point where the straps could outweigh the phone. The English account says phone charms "first originated in Japan and later in the United States", and spread from there to the United Kingdom and Ireland. When the iPhone 3GS arrived in 2008 without an attachment slot, a Korean company answered with hanging charms fixed by screws. The British designer Anya Hindmarch put charms into a collection called Pimp Your Phones in 2018.

What gets hung there is the reason this object is in an amulet atlas rather than an accessories one. Omamori — the brocade pouches Japanese shrines and temples issue, with a prayer or an invocation sealed inside and a rule against opening them — are, in the cited account's words, "often spotted on bags, hung on cellphone straps, in cars, etc." The shrine's range is specific about what each is for: kōtsū-anzen for traffic safety, gakugyō-jōju for passing examinations, en-musubi for finding a partner, anzan for a safe delivery, shōbai-hanjō for business. Dazaifu Tenmangū sells a keychain amulet for safe travel and a bracelet amulet, which is the same shift in fastening. Inference — a charm designed to be tied to something found a phone waiting with a hole already drilled in it, and the reason there was a hole had nothing to do with the charm.

The argument attached to this object is the usual one and the shrines are on record in it. The cited account notes that when demand outruns what a shrine can make, popular shrines and temples turn to factories, and that "priests have been known to complain about the quality and authenticity of the products made by factories". It also records the other end: generic omamori sold in ordinary Japanese shops with Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, Snoopy or Kewpie on them, issued by no shrine and typically not spiritual in nature. That is two named positions, and this atlas reports both and settles neither.

Inference — the strap is also the clearest case in this atlas of a charm losing its mounting. The flip phone had a hole; the slab phone mostly does not, and the workarounds — the jack plug, the screw, the case with a loop moulded in — are all later inventions answering the same problem. What happens to a carried charm when the thing it was tied to changes shape is a question this collection will keep meeting.

Bought at a phone shop, a shrine office, a souvenir counter, a convenience store, or given away with a drink or as promotional merchandise. Attached with a cow-hitch or lark's-head knot through the strap hole, or by whatever adapter the handset forces. An omamori on a strap follows the omamori rules: not opened, replaced about once a year, returned to the shrine it came from to be burnt. A character strap follows no rules at all.
