The image is legible before the text is. The Golden Legend, the thirteenth-century compendium of saints' lives, tells how Christopher, after his conversion, spent his life carrying travellers across a river; one day a boy asked to be carried, grew heavier with every step as the water rose, and on the far bank revealed himself as Christ. From that story various Christian denominations made him the patron saint of travellers, and small images of him are worn at the neck, on a bracelet, carried in a pocket or placed in a vehicle. Miniature statues are frequently displayed in automobiles. He is named patron of motorists and drivers alongside mariners, ferrymen, archers, bookbinders and gardeners.

The medals say out loud what they are for. The widespread French phrase is "Regarde St Christophe et va-t-en rassuré" — look at Saint Christopher and go on reassured. The Spanish medals and holy cards carry a harder promise: "Si en San Cristóbal confías, de accidente no morirás" — if you trust in Saint Christopher, you will not die in an accident. This atlas prints those two sentences as what the object says of itself, names who says it, and stops there.

The Church's own position moved under the object. Christopher's commemoration was of relatively late date, around 1550; by 1954 it had been extended to all Masses; in 1970 it was dropped from the general calendar of the Roman rite and restricted to particular calendars. Inference — the medal did not go with it. A devotional object with a working use outlived the liturgical decision that demoted it, which is the ordinary pattern for this whole class and not a Catholic peculiarity.

He is not alone on the dashboard. Japan's shrines sell a kōtsū-anzen omamori specifically for traffic safety, and it hangs from the same mirror in Nagoya that the medal is clipped under in Marseille.

Bought at a church shop, a shrine stall, a service station or online, and fixed where the driver can see it: clipped to the visor, adhered to the dash, hung from the mirror, slipped behind a licence plate. A medal may be blessed by a priest as a sacramental; nothing requires it to be. It stays with the car more often than with the driver, and is passed on with the vehicle.

Still sold and still fixed in cars across Catholic Europe and the Americas in 2026, and still stocked alongside the Miraculous Medal and the scapular in the same shops. No dated price was read for this record.
