There is no single origin claimed for it, and the sources do not pretend otherwise. Variations are traced to ancient Greece, to Tibet, to Ireland and to several Native American peoples; the Greek ones were stones the sea had smoothed, and the concept begins, as the cited account puts it, with the simple act of picking up a smooth stone and fiddling with it. A worry stone is one of the few objects in this atlas that anybody can find on a beach.

What it claims is unusually narrow, and the cited source hedges it in the same breath: the motion "is thought to reduce stress, but there is no conclusive scientific evidence to support this". This atlas does not test that and does not settle it.

Where it is documented most precisely is in a clinic. Writers on cognitive behavioral therapy treat the worry stone as one of a set of folk practices that work as psychologically healthy self-soothing exercises, taught early in treatment to displace familiar but destructive coping habits — nail-biting, scratching, lip-biting — and to ready a patient to face anxiety or trauma safely. The cited account singles out short-term treatment of refugees, where complexity and unfamiliarity are the constraints and a stone is simple and intuitive enough to be useful. Later, once a patient has learned a fuller relaxation script, the stone becomes a reminder of it: the impulse to reach for it is itself the signal that the person is anxious.

Inference — that last function is the interesting one for this atlas, because it is the only charm here whose stated job is to tell its carrier something rather than to keep something away. The stone reports.

Tumbled and polished, or picked up already smooth. Sold in a box with a card, or handed over in a session, or found. There is no consecration, no maker's restriction and no retirement rite. A lost one is replaced.
