| หมายเหตุ | Dated from the earliest appearance the cited account gives, in Malta between 4400 and 3600 BCE, with Newgrange at around 3200 BCE. The end is left open because the triskelion is still borne on the arms and flags of the Isle of Man; the protective uses documented here — the bowls, the wedjat, the shield blazon — all end far earlier. |

Mesopotamia is the only place in this record where somebody says what the spiral is for. Incantation bowls were usually inscribed in a spiral, beginning at the rim and moving toward the centre, most of them in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, made in Upper Mesopotamia and Syria from the sixth to the eighth centuries. The scholar John Charles Arnold describes how they worked: "When placed upside down under each corner of a house, demons would follow the inscribed charms that spiraled from the outer rim inward, only to be caught in the center." The geometry is the mechanism. The spiral is a trap, and a text written that way is a corridor with no exit.
Europe cut it into tombs long before anyone wrote in it. The triple spiral, the triskelion, first appears in Malta between 4400 and 3600 BCE, and then in the astronomical calendar of the megalithic tomb at Newgrange in Ireland, built around 3200 BCE. It runs through European Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts and into the Iron Age, especially in the La Tène culture. From the late sixth century BCE it appears on hoplite shields and Greek pottery, and it was adopted as an emblem by the rulers of Syracuse, possibly in connection with the island's Greek name Trinacria, 'having three headlands'. It survives in the arms and flags of the Isle of Man.
Egypt kept a spiral on the eye. The wedjat has a line extending below and toward the rear of the eye that ends in a curl or spiral; the Egyptologist Richard H. Wilkinson suggests the curling line derives from the facial markings of the cheetah, which Egyptians associated with the sky because its spots were likened to stars. In New Kingdom elaborations the rear spiral could become a bird's tail feathers.
The Caucasus keeps a spiralled version of another sign: according to Vakhushti of Kartli, the tribal banner of the Avar khans depicted a wolf with a standard bearing a double-spiral swastika.
Transmission or convergence: unknown, and the sources read here do not say. The triskelion page sets out the recurrences and declines to explain them. The distances are the argument against a single story — Malta and Newgrange are separated by twelve hundred years and a sea, and the Mesopotamian bowl spiral comes three and a half thousand years after either and is not an ornament at all but a way of arranging letters. Inference — the shield blazon and the bowl inscription are doing different jobs with the same curve: one is a face shown to an enemy, like a gorgoneion, and the other is a floor plan for a maze. This record files them together because they share a shape and says plainly that sharing a shape is all they are known to share.

Filed under the geometric family, which this record's own objection got added to the vocabulary: the spiral is a line that turns back on itself and belongs with shape rather than with rope.
